Operation Squeegee – July 1st to 15th 2010 June 11, 2010

Whenever I set foot on a beach and smell the salty air, it feels like coming home. I can spend hours just sitting there and watching the waves hitting the shore, the clouds passing by and birds sailing the sky. I never leave without collecting some seashells. I love the sea and its inhabitants and therefore the worsening oil spill situation in the Gulf of Mexico upsets me deeply and makes me feel helpless.

At the end of the day

If you feel the same and would like to do help somehow, please consider volunteering or donating to the “Operation Squeegee“. This Second Life Fundraiser event to benefit the National Wildlife Federation is currently being organised by Further Monday (under the name Tidal Shoreland) together with other designers, bloggers and volunteers. More information on the event and how to join is available on the website “Operation Squeegee”.

“We are looking for talented content creators, like yourself, to participate in an SL exclusive fundraising effort to support recovery efforts from the ongoing gulf oil-spill. The event will run from July 1st – 15th, and will have lots of events and publicity associated with it, as well as the vendor merchandise area dedicated to your contributions!

Merchants will be provided with 2 x 1prim vendors. A 100% charity donation vendor and a 50% charity donation vendor. You choose how much of your sales go to charity. You will be allocated a cart and 10 prims (the prim count of the cart does not go towards your total prim count) You may use the fundraiser vendors, decorations, store logo, LM giver etc up to 10 prims.

If you are unable to participate in the fundraiser but would like to make a donation, you are more than welcome to. There will be donation boxes located around the merchandise area with 100% of all funds donated going towards The National Wildlife Federation, alternatively you can pay our Treasurer directly – Tidal Shoreland (if you do please let her know via IM and/or notecard).

Operation Squeegee - 1st to 15th July!!

Funds raised through Operation Squeegee will go to The National Wildlife Federation. Funds that are donated to the federation will support the following efforts:

* Development and deployment of the National Wildlife Federation’s Gulf Coast Surveillance Teams, a volunteer network that is being organized to monitor the coast for wildlife impacted by the oil spill. Beyond the initial surveillance needed, this effort will then shift to long term volunteer restoration programs.
* Restoration of vulnerable nesting and breeding grounds, as well as other delicate ecosystems found throughout the Gulf Coast for water birds, sea turtles and other animals.
* Public education about the oil spill and its impacts on wildlife, including our online efforts at http://www.nwf.org/oilspill and informing the press and others about the impacts the oil spill is having on coastal communities and wildlife.
* Policy work at the national and state level to support restoration of habitat in the Gulf Coast and better protection of our waters and coastlines.”

The Intergalactic Spy June 1, 2010

The Intergalactic Spy

Only a handful of trusted people knew her civil name. To everyone else she was Agent Pink, Intergalactic Spy, one of the Defenders of the Triangulum Galaxy and someone you wouldn’t want to cross.

The day she turned legend was when a convoy of spaceships from the far away Star Nebula entered Her Majesty’s territory and started an agressive attack on the capital city and the President’s residence. Without hesitation she threw herself into the line of fire and fought the enemy, one by one, saving the ancient civilisation of Triangulum all on her own.

Under Attack

Rumour has it that when the President awarded her the Intergalactic Medal of Distinction, a quick smile curved her lips. But mysteriously, none of the hundreds of cameras documenting the ceremony had been able to catch it.

It takes too long to build a good reputation to risk losing it for a blink of an eye in history.

V is for Venus Flytrap May 5, 2010

Hi there! Sorry for my long silence, but I have been experiencing quite a bit of SL fatigue recently and was totally unmotivated to take pictures, blog or even just log into SL. However, I felt a slight spark of inspiration tonight to take up the Dork’s Alphabet again. Don’t worry, you didn’t miss a large part of it, I decided to have a break from the strict alphabetic order and catch the ideas as they fly by. Just realised the unintended pun when looking at today’s card – teehee.

I would like to thank Further Monday for showing me the hilarious Ollipog store at the Fantasy Fair. It was very hard for me to decide which one to choose because I loved them all! In the end I went for their RFL item and this “Fly J’Accuzi”. So if you were ever looking to change into a “Blubird of Crappiness” with a cherry on your head, a tiny ghost lemur or a mandrake magic root (!!), this should be your first stop.

Further doesn’t only constantly find cool avatars, she also just founded the in-world group “Shapeshifters Union” and the accompanying Flickr group here. Yay, I have been yearning for such a group for ages! If you consider yourself a shapeshifter, please do join this group. There will also be regular events, for example get-togethers at a surprise sim with the challenge to dress according to the sim theme. Hope to see you there. 🙂

Do you have the balls to pose? April 6, 2010

Hello, my name is Paulina and I am a pose addict. Therefore I am more than delighted if talented creators throw together lots of poses and beautiful things into a big package and create a portable pose set. You can find a number of these at Pose Fair, like the brilliant “Photobles” by Mudhoney, which are beautiful little sceneries in a small box (see my previous post about the Fireplace Photoble here). Today I want to show you two of my favourite sets, the “Ball Pit” by Olive Juice and the “Window Shopper” by Glitterati.

The Balloon Advantage

If you read this blog regularly, you will know that my fellow Dorkette Bella Baroque is the creative genius behind “Olive Juice”. I love her poses because they are so lively, unique and often have a dorky twist, which you can also find in her “Ball Pit”. It comes with 11 built-in poses (accessible by a menu), including jumps, falls and a smexy “over-a-ball” laying pose. Now I only wish that I had a red balloon like my little bunny friend to protect me from a rough landing.

Window Shopper

The “Window Shopper” pose prop by Suti Capalini (Glitterati Gay Poses) is another favourite of mine. It took me ages to get the final blog picture because I just couldn’t choose which of the 15 poses to use! The jumping one? The one on the floor wrapped around the mannequin? The smexy floor one?? I think I have to start all over and go trough them all again…Damn you, Suti! In the end I decided to go for the one that shows most off the whole set, but I am sure that you will be seeing detail shots in other future posts.

Pose Fair 2010 is raising money for the charity Motivation , which does work in low-income countries to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities.

Spring is here, let’s frolic in the flowers! April 4, 2010

A virtual world is defined by the creativity, fantasy and talent of its residents. Our builders create the fundaments of such a world, the landscapes, houses, its flora and even its fauna. The designers make us look beautiful and enable our virtual selves to be whatever we want to be. But there is one group which tends to be a bit overlooked – the posemakers and animators. Imagine how your SL would look without them.

What would your SL be like without poses?

Beautiful avatars would stand in that beautiful world like scarecrows, watching the butterflies dancing over the meadows. We might be able to waddle right behind them with our noobish duck walk. Instead of ballroom dancing there would be only ballroom bumping-into-each-other in a desparate attempt to connect with each other. Couples could only sit next to each other and lovingly stare at each other from the corners of their eyes. It would be a beautiful world indeed, but at the same time a deadly boring one!

Hai butterfly!

This year, for the first time, posemakers have put together a Pose Fair (find more information here) to raise money for the charity Motivation , which does work in low-income countries to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities. I spent a few hours and lots of Lindens there and I am absolutely amazed by the huge variety of poses and creators (many of who I didn’t know before). The adorable butterfly pictured above for example is a donation gift by LAP and includes four different animations when worn.

Crazy Chick

Poses can turn us upside down, like this handstand by “aDORKable Poses”, which is part of a whole handstand set!

Bubble Dreamer

They enable us to visualise our favourite pastimes, our thoughts and our dreams.

Childhood memories

We need posemakers and animators as much as we need fashion designers and builders, so let’s celebrate them and give them our appreciation, and please don’t forget to credit them in your blog posts. Happy Easter everyone!
