Who let the dorks out?

The Dorks’ Guide to Burn2 – Part I October 18, 2010

Even though RL is still winning over SL at the moment, I wouldn’t want to miss my favourite virtual event, Burning Life (or Burn2, as it is called now). It seems a lot smaller this year, which in the first moment made me feel a bit sad – but then I realised that this means I will definitely get to see everything in the short time frame, which was a relief in a way. I haven’t forgot the marathons in the last years, when I was flying around with speed of light and trying not to miss anything!

I started off with a small tour today but already found one of my favourite builds EVER: “Concrete Soldiers” by Liz Gealach [SLURL]. Her build is an interpretation of a poem which you receive on a notecard, and features a very grey and bleak street silhouette with a lonely sheep.

Concrete Soldiers

You must stay at this build for several minutes, because a sun will rise and transform the whole scenery into a small paradise of colours. First I didn’t realise what was going on and it confused me a lot that one second the butterflies were there and the next one they were gone. But after I figured out what was going on, I stood for a while and watched the scenery change. What a fantastic idea!

Concrete Soldiers

I also really liked “POP ATOMIC” by Mikaty Slade and Emily Lang. [SLURL]. From the notecard: “The ATOMIC bomb changed the Japanese people forever. 8-bit console games are a loving part of Japan’s POP culture nowadays. I felt that both the atomic bomb and the 8-bit consoles are powerful symbols of 20th century’s civilization, at least as experienced by the Japanese people. And, so, POP ATOMIC was born.”

POP ATOMIC

Lastly, I thought that “The Painted Glasstower” by Betty Tureaud[SLURL] was both a beautiful and an impressive installation. The glass panels change over time and I think there is also an elevator box driving through the middle of the tower to the top (I entered the hole from the top and then landed on top of said box and drove a bit back up with it).

The Painted Glasstower

Hopefully I will be able to continue my Burn2 exploration in the next days and share more fabulous builds with you!

The one which was supposed to be about fishies and ended up being a semi-farewell July 11, 2010

I just realised that it has been exactly a month since my last post and I apologise for the long pause. I have been going through a phase where SL has lost its fascination for me and at this point I am not really sure if I will get it back. I just don’t feel the inspiration anymore to explore, put together outfits or take blog pictures. I log in, clear my messages, look at my inventory and then decide to log off again.

I have heard of many other residents of similar “age” (3 years) that they are going through the same and that this seems to be a common phase where people either take long breaks, leave or come back under a different account. For me it goes even deeper than that. SL has helped me through a very stressful phase in my life in which I often felt very low and, without noticing it at that point, retracted to this virtual world. It gave me an outlet to be creative, to get the kick of exploring new places and virtual art, to enjoy cheap online retail therapy. It provided me with a constant, the virtual home I am sharing with Fi, which always was peaceful and relaxing, and of course I met amazing people and other creative minds there.

Now things in RL have changed. Some stresses have ended, I have learnt to deal better with others. RL was very busy, I had a few health problems but I am now feeling better than I have felt in ages – and it makes me shy away from SL. I’d rather be out in the real world, enjoying the summer and the flowers, getting on top of RL duties and hobbies I neglected. A lot of SL things I used to spend hours doing now seem so unimportant and far away, almost like from a different life. Sometimes it is even a bit hard for me to understand why I spent so much time doing them (searching for the perfect pair of tights, for example). I keep in contact with my SL friends through Plurk and in the end those interactions now matter more to me than having an avatar and a virtual home – funnily enough, many of them do not log in much anymore either and use other social websites to keep in contact.

Maybe I subconsciously feel that coming back to SL might affect me in a negative way. SL can suck you in and time seems to fly much faster, as if two hours in RL equal half an hour in SL. I don’t want to “officially” leave SL, I am still too attached to my avatar for that, plus I am thinking of all the Lindens I invested! LOL. But I will officially go on an extended break. There might be a blog entry, or there might be none, and maybe bad weather in autumn will drive me back to the always sunny virtual world. But when I am honest with myself, maybe I don’t want to get that fascination with SL back after all and rather hold on to RL. We’ll see.

The one thing I feel very sorry about is that this phase coincides with “Operation Squeegee“, which so far managed to raise an incredible amount of L$830.000 (more than $3000) for the National Wildlife Foundation!! Unfortunately I was away for most of it and was hoping to do a long blog post this weekend, but for various reasons only managed this attempt to take up Ariel Wingtip’s Operation Squeegee Blogger challenge. The original challenge includes the squeegee, but I fell in love with the fish and decided to use it instead. 😀 You can get the free antlers in a box near the stage and a squeegee pack from the donation bucket at the Operation Squeegee Headquarters (SLURL). Operation Squeegee runs until 15th July and has a ton of events, which can be found on the website. There are sooo many awesome things for sale – cute T-Shirts with marine animals, deco items, a houseboat, poses, cute trees with eyes, quirky transportation vehicles…Please go and have a look and support the help efforts for the wildlife affected by the oil spill. Maybe we will manage to break the one million mark!

This means BIG DEALS for you every single week from awesome designers. Every Saturday, from 12am-12pm SLT, you get whatever the designer puts out for only 60L. Seaside Splash Friends Pose

As of two weeks ago, Super-Bargain Saturday hit Olive Juice, and it’s back again! Since it’s officially summer time in the States, that means beach parties and fun with friends in any world. So I thought this friends pose would be perfect for capturing those fun moments on film. AND, since it’s a SBS release, that means it is only 60L all day today! After midnight tonight, it will go to full price, so grab it on the cheap while you can.

And don’t forget to check out the other great deals at the other Super-Bargain Saturday stores, like my neighbor in Morning Glory, Awesome Blossom. The chair and table are all texture change too, so the options are endless. All that for only 60L today too!

Happy Shopping 🙂

Operation Squeegee – July 1st to 15th 2010 June 11, 2010

Whenever I set foot on a beach and smell the salty air, it feels like coming home. I can spend hours just sitting there and watching the waves hitting the shore, the clouds passing by and birds sailing the sky. I never leave without collecting some seashells. I love the sea and its inhabitants and therefore the worsening oil spill situation in the Gulf of Mexico upsets me deeply and makes me feel helpless.

At the end of the day

If you feel the same and would like to do help somehow, please consider volunteering or donating to the “Operation Squeegee“. This Second Life Fundraiser event to benefit the National Wildlife Federation is currently being organised by Further Monday (under the name Tidal Shoreland) together with other designers, bloggers and volunteers. More information on the event and how to join is available on the website “Operation Squeegee”.

“We are looking for talented content creators, like yourself, to participate in an SL exclusive fundraising effort to support recovery efforts from the ongoing gulf oil-spill. The event will run from July 1st – 15th, and will have lots of events and publicity associated with it, as well as the vendor merchandise area dedicated to your contributions!

Merchants will be provided with 2 x 1prim vendors. A 100% charity donation vendor and a 50% charity donation vendor. You choose how much of your sales go to charity. You will be allocated a cart and 10 prims (the prim count of the cart does not go towards your total prim count) You may use the fundraiser vendors, decorations, store logo, LM giver etc up to 10 prims.

If you are unable to participate in the fundraiser but would like to make a donation, you are more than welcome to. There will be donation boxes located around the merchandise area with 100% of all funds donated going towards The National Wildlife Federation, alternatively you can pay our Treasurer directly – Tidal Shoreland (if you do please let her know via IM and/or notecard).

Operation Squeegee - 1st to 15th July!!

Funds raised through Operation Squeegee will go to The National Wildlife Federation. Funds that are donated to the federation will support the following efforts:

* Development and deployment of the National Wildlife Federation’s Gulf Coast Surveillance Teams, a volunteer network that is being organized to monitor the coast for wildlife impacted by the oil spill. Beyond the initial surveillance needed, this effort will then shift to long term volunteer restoration programs.
* Restoration of vulnerable nesting and breeding grounds, as well as other delicate ecosystems found throughout the Gulf Coast for water birds, sea turtles and other animals.
* Public education about the oil spill and its impacts on wildlife, including our online efforts at http://www.nwf.org/oilspill and informing the press and others about the impacts the oil spill is having on coastal communities and wildlife.
* Policy work at the national and state level to support restoration of habitat in the Gulf Coast and better protection of our waters and coastlines.”

More information on “Operation Squeegee” can be found here.

Do you have the balls to pose? April 6, 2010

Hello, my name is Paulina and I am a pose addict. Therefore I am more than delighted if talented creators throw together lots of poses and beautiful things into a big package and create a portable pose set. You can find a number of these at Pose Fair, like the brilliant “Photobles” by Mudhoney, which are beautiful little sceneries in a small box (see my previous post about the Fireplace Photoble here). Today I want to show you two of my favourite sets, the “Ball Pit” by Olive Juice and the “Window Shopper” by Glitterati.

The Balloon Advantage

If you read this blog regularly, you will know that my fellow Dorkette Bella Baroque is the creative genius behind “Olive Juice”. I love her poses because they are so lively, unique and often have a dorky twist, which you can also find in her “Ball Pit”. It comes with 11 built-in poses (accessible by a menu), including jumps, falls and a smexy “over-a-ball” laying pose. Now I only wish that I had a red balloon like my little bunny friend to protect me from a rough landing.

Window Shopper

The “Window Shopper” pose prop by Suti Capalini (Glitterati Gay Poses) is another favourite of mine. It took me ages to get the final blog picture because I just couldn’t choose which of the 15 poses to use! The jumping one? The one on the floor wrapped around the mannequin? The smexy floor one?? I think I have to start all over and go trough them all again…Damn you, Suti! In the end I decided to go for the one that shows most off the whole set, but I am sure that you will be seeing detail shots in other future posts.

Pose Fair 2010 is raising money for the charity Motivation , which does work in low-income countries to enhance the quality of life of people with mobility disabilities.
